Briefly

Ice may be more hazardous than snow this weekend. What to expect and how to prepare.
"The weather service is forecasting "crippling ice and sleet" in the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley, and "the potential for long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions.""
""It does not take much freezing rain to accumulate and make roads and any elevated surfaces, such as overpasses, very treacherous," Chaskelson said."
""It sticks more, it coats it and starts to weigh them down. It can really cause those power lines to sag and droop. It causes stress on the branches of trees and can cause large limbs to fall down.""
More than 200 million people will be in the path of sleet, ice, snow, or extreme cold beginning Friday. Nearly everyone east of the Rockies is expected to see impacts. Freezing rain and ice pose the greatest hazards, with forecasts of crippling ice and sleet across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley and the potential for long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and impassable travel. Small accumulations of freezing rain can glaze roads and elevated surfaces, making them treacherous. Ice can greatly increase branch and power line weight and is far harder to remove than snow.
