Tom Llamas, now the anchor of NBC Nightly News, expressed astonishment at the significance of President Trump's policies—tariffs and immigration raids—in local news across the country. On a pre-promotion tour, he met with local news reporters, gaining insights into their challenges and reporting focus. Llamas emphasized the importance of local newsrooms, highlighting how these topics dominated newscasts. His experiences reflect local media's vital role in conveying community issues effectively, especially in regions lacking extensive bureau coverage.
Local news, I came from local news, spent some of my best years working in newsrooms in Miami and New York City and really honed my skills there.
Over the last month, they actually pulled me off the air in a big way, and I traveled the country going to local stations, getting into local newsrooms.
The two stories that I saw in every local newsroom were immigration raids that were happening in these towns and cities, and then tariff stories.
It's really nice to see local news is great. They're still working real hard. They've never been asked to do more.
