Ahead of the World Conference on Tobacco Control, Taoiseach Mr. Martin expressed his disapproval of new US regulations mandating that J1 visa applicants make all social media accounts used in the last five years public for thorough vetting by US authorities. He highlighted concerns regarding freedom of speech and noted that the atmosphere created by these measures induces fear and anxiety among young travelers. While acknowledging the necessity of security, he deemed the measures excessive, especially as J1 applications have decreased this year.
I believe those measures by the United States are excessive. I don't approve of them. I don't agree with them.
There is an issue around freedom of speech, but it's more the atmosphere that's created by these measures, the fear and the anxiety that young people will now experience travelling.
