President Trump is set to implement a stringent immigration policy via the enhanced Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has gained over 19,000 employees during the Biden administration. However, experts highlight ongoing recruiting and retention challenges within the department, which may hinder the execution of Trump's ambitious policies, including mass deportation and stricter border security. Former officials express concerns that the staffing levels are insufficient to meet legal requirements or public expectations, despite assurances from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem regarding the necessity of adequate resources and training for staff.
That's one of the biggest problems that has plagued all immigration agencies for as long as I've been in the government. There's not enough people to do the work that we were required to do by law and by public expectation.
