The US government has terminated nearly 1,000 research grants worth over $2.4 billion at Harvard University, affecting critical funding for various research projects. The cuts come from multiple agencies, particularly the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is responsible for a majority of the reductions. Researchers express deep concern, noting that the loss of federal funding represents a substantial threat to ongoing research efforts, which Harvard's extensive resources cannot fully compensate. The terminations reflect broader tensions surrounding political ideologies in academic institutions amid the Trump administration's policies.
Last week, the administration of US President Donald Trump announced the terminations in a press release, but did not specify how many would be targeted or list individual grants.
"Harvard cannot, even with its vast resources, just make up for this loss of federal funding," says Joseph Loparo, a biological chemist at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
