Green Acres Mall on Long Island becomes the latest mall to fall victim to social media-inspired "takeovers"
"Next thing you know, I can't come in and go out of the mall. Like, we got we got locked in Akira for two hours, Hurley said."
"That is crazy, all these kids running up and down all over the place, one person said."
"They tried to break in. We tried to close the door, and we closed door to try and avoid that, and called 911, a deli manager said."
Teenagers flooded Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream after social media posts called for a so-called "takeover". Nassau County police responded, made at least nine arrests, mounted units combed the parking lot, and the mall shut down as stores secured employees and shoppers. Shoppers reported being locked inside stores for hours while groups of youths ran through the mall and caused chaos. Earlier in the week, a Bronx takeover involved teens smashing a deli's glass, breaking a McDonald's window, and resulted in 18 arrests. Police and mall security across the Tri-State Area increased camera monitoring and patrols, and some community members urged greater parental awareness of social-media-driven gatherings.
