""And I says, well, I'll fly when Alex gets his pilot's license," said Dahlke."
""As an airline employee, you do get these flight benefits. I was able to throw her name on a list and then put her on the stand-by list," he said."
""They made sure they told me to take Dramamine first. I've never taken Dramamine in my life either," she said."
""It's very, very nice. I felt like a spoiled celebrity. I had the first seat in first class," she said."
Frances Dahlke, age 88, completed her first airplane flight with her grandson, Alex Shupe, at the controls after he earned his pilot's license. Shupe used airline employee benefits to add her to a standby list and arranged the trip from La Crosse Regional Airport. Family preparations included advising her to take Dramamine before going through security. The flight lasted about an hour and a half and landed in Chicago. Dahlke rode in first class and described the experience as feeling like a spoiled celebrity while enjoying the clouds. Dahlke and Shupe described the flight as a meaningful, lasting memory.
