President Trump and Elon Musk are advocating for the identification and elimination of fraud within the federal government, citing a recent GAO report to support their agenda. Although the GAO estimates that fraud and waste account for 3% to 7% of federal spending, they emphasized that most spending is legitimate. GAO Director Rebecca Shea clarified that identifying fraud requires legal proof, which can often take time. She suggested that AI could enhance fraud detection, providing advanced analytical capabilities that human oversight lacks.
"To call something fraud, you need to prove it in a criminal or civil case," Shea said, emphasizing the need for evidence in allegations of government fraud.
"AI does offer promise when we're able to use the data systems. There are a fair number of actual structured data sets that I think could be more readily used for fraud detection with AI capabilities," Shea noted.
