Thirteen-year-old Savannah Gatchell was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash around 3 a.m. Tuesday in Marblehead. A 16-year-old driver was charged with operating under the influence by the Essex County District Attorney's Office. A community fundraising page collected $29,900 toward a $50,000 goal for funeral expenses within 24 hours. A memorial was created at the crash site on Atlantic Avenue. Family members described Savannah as outgoing, loving, and compassionate and said she provided comfort to others. Her mother said Savannah had been sneaking out, expressed deep grief, and wants the person responsible held accountable.

She had a huge heart and always cared for others. She was the kind of person you could turn to when you were sad or stressed, and she would be there to listen and bring comfort. Even at such a young age, she had so much life, light, and joy within her, and she touched countless lives around her.
