The Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles was destroyed in a fire during the Palisades Fire on January 7. Rev. Grace Park mourns the loss of the church's physical structure, emphasizing that while the community of faith endures, the emotional toll of losing tangible memories and the church building is significant. The congregation has relocated to another church, but many members have also lost their homes. As they navigate grief, church leaders remain hopeful about rebuilding in the future.
"It was absolutely surreal to see flames coming off the top of those crosses," said the Rev. Grace Park, who has served as one of the church's pastors for nearly two decades.
"The reality is that this is our home... The photos mean something to us... We need to take the moment to grieve them," said Park.
"I am constantly reminding folks in church... that the church is not a building, but it is her people," said Park.
Church leaders say they hope to rebuild someday, but it's too early to talk about when that might be.
