Gangs mix another potent sedative into U.S. street drugs causing 'mass overdoses'
Briefly

The combination of medetomidine with fentanyl triggered a wave of overdoses in the U.S. 'The numbers reported out of Philadelphia were 160 hospitalizations over a 3 or 4-day period,' said Alex Krotulski from NPS Discovery.
Medetomidine, primarily used as an animal tranquilizer, has been linked to mass overdose outbreaks in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Mixed into street drugs, it slows the heart rate to dangerous levels.
Public health advisories have been released in Illinois and Pennsylvania as reports of the fentanyl-medetomidine mix causing extremely low heart rates in overdose patients surfaced. The chemical is undetectable by drug users.
