Former Costa Rican President Arias says US revoked visa DW 04/02/2025
Briefly

Oscar Arias, former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Prize winner, reported that the US revoked his visa shortly after he criticized President Trump on social media. Arias, who likened Trump to 'a Roman emperor' for dictating global conduct, expressed concern over small nations challenging US power. He also criticized current Costa Rican President Chaves for succumbing to US influence amid efforts to manage China's regional presence. His visa revocation aligns with actions against other lawmakers opposing US directives, highlighting ongoing geopolitical tensions.
"I received an email from the US government informing me that they have suspended the visa I have in my passport. The communication was very terse, it does not give reasons. One could have conjectures," Arias told reporters.
In my governments Costa Rica never received orders from Washington, as if we were a 'Banana Republic.'"
It has never been easy for a small country to disagree with the US government, much less so, when its president behaves like a Roman emperor, telling the rest of the world what to do.
Arias had taken to social media critiquing President Rodrigo Chaves' administration's yielding to US pressure, as Washington sought to counter China's influence in the region.
