During a recent 4 Nations Face-Off hockey match in Montreal, fans booed the U.S. national anthem for the second time, prompting mixed reactions from American players. Following public address announcements urging respect, the booing persisted throughout the anthem, generating substantial noise from the crowd. Despite the disruption, U.S. players, including Zach Werenski and Connor Hellebuyck, emphasized their focus and motivation, dismissing the boos as a non-issue while acknowledging the competitive context of the rivalry against Canada.
U.S. players have been trying to tune it out... we sing it for the troops that protected our freedom. That doesn't really mean anything to me.
We kind of had an idea. We used it as motivation the best we could and found a way to get a win.
This time, far more of the fans at Bell Centre booed than Thursday night before the U.S. beat Finland.
In the spirit of this great game that unites everyone that you kindly respect the anthems and the players that represent each country.
