Sixty-two screenings of KPop Demon Hunters ran this weekend at the Cinemark Century multiplex in Daly City, and staff added a few late screenings to meet demand. The animated Netflix movie follows a fictitious all-girl rock band's battle against evil spirits and is playing in nearly 1,800 U.S. theaters this weekend only as a singalong. The film launched on Netflix in June and drew fans back to theaters for communal singalong showings. Families and costumed fans attended early screenings, and many nationwide showings sold out. Seven soundtrack songs reached the Spotify top 20, and Netflix called the event a special gift for fans.
"There's probably 60 of us," Yanesa said.
"Good songs, good storyline, good drawing," Yanesa said. "They hit a home run with this one."
"There's really nothing in the league of this that we've seen so far making the leap from streaming to the big screen," said Shawn Robbins, Fandango's director of movie analytics.
In a statement to NPR, Netflix described the weekend of Demon Hunters singalongs as "a special gift for the fans."
