Damien Hurstel, 19, allegedly stabbed and sawed off the head of 45-year-old Anthony Casalaspro inside a Cary Avenue home in West Brighton on Oct. 6. Investigators found the victim's head beside the body, a plastic soup ladle on the torso, and the victim's brain matter in a kitchen blender and on a spoon. Hurstel confessed and now faces second-degree murder, manslaughter, and weapons charges. Hurstel was transferred to solitary at Rikers Island after hospitalization. His attorney entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea and reported Hurstel had difficulty separating fantasy from reality and uncertainty about events and medication. Hurstel reportedly showed his 16-year-old sister the bloody scene and asked about their mother's safety.
