Landon Thomas Jr., a New York Times reporter, emailed Jeffrey Epstein on June 1, 2016 and again on September 27, 2017 notifying him that John Connolly was researching a book about Epstein. Thomas told Epstein Connolly seemed interested in Epstein's relationship with the news media and relayed an allegation that a Trump quote had been fabricated, calling that allegation false. Thomas described Connolly as a sensible, solid reporter and noted Connolly was asking about hiring Ken Starr and possible Trump-related digging. Investigative reporter Daniel Boguslaw flagged the emails on X on November 12, 2025. The emails appeared tied to the book Filthy Rich (Connolly, James Patterson, Tim Malloy, October 2016).
