Elizabeth Aanja 'Betty' Rundell was born April 12, 1949, in Spokane, Washington, to Helen and John 'Jack' Toumy and was the younger sister of John Toumy. Her family moved among Palo Alto, Portland, and Salt Lake City before returning to Palo Alto, where her parents helped found Covenant Presbyterian Church. She attended Jordan Middle and Palo Alto High, studied at UC Santa Barbara, and graduated from San Jose State before beginning a decades-long career managing department stores. In 1967 she married artist Charles 'Chuck' Rundell and they had three sons: Doyle Franklin and twins Travis Eugene and Jordan Thomas. Chuck devoted himself to raising the boys while Betty continued her operations career, including roles at the Emporium and helping open the first Bloomingdale's in California. After Chuck's death she focused on family, later serving as CFO of Assured Relocation and becoming deeply involved with her granddaughters in Sun Valley.
