Elon Musk's initiative for government cost-cutting, termed the Department of Government Efficiency (U.S. DOGE Service), has faced backlash following the discovery of significant errors in reported savings. An online "wall of receipts" touted $65 billion in savings, yet the five largest claims were deleted after they were found to contain inflated figures—a troubling indication of poor oversight. While White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the initiative, the inaccuracies have sparked concerns regarding its effectiveness, especially given the mass firings and cutbacks they have previously initiated across federal operations.
The cuts, highlighted on an earlier version of the "wall of receipts" posted by Elon Musk's team, contained mistakes that vastly inflated the amount of money saved.
The organization, which is also known as the U.S. DOGE Service, has deleted all of the five biggest "savings" on that original list after media outlets pointed out they were riddled with errors.
The scale of that ledger's errors - and the misunderstandings and poor quality control that seemed to underlie them - has raised questions about the effort's broader work.
The website offered no explanation for why it had removed some items or how it had arrived at the higher total, increasing up to $65 billion.
