On Thursday night, agents from the Department of Homeland Security executed search warrants at two student residences at Columbia University, following the arrest of anti-Israel activist Mahomoud Khalil. Interim President Katrina Armstrong informed the Columbia community that while no arrests or detentions occurred during the searches, they adhered to legal protocols requiring warrants for entry into non-public university areas. Armstrong expressed understanding of the stress within the community and emphasized the institution's commitment to knowledge, rule of law, and support for its members during these challenging times.
The University has a clear protocol in place. Consistent with this protocol, our longstanding practice, and the practices of cities and institutions throughout the country, the University requires that law enforcement have a judicial warrant to enter non-public University areas, including residential University buildings.
Despite the unprecedented challenges, Columbia University will remain a place where the pursuit of knowledge is cherished and fiercely protected, where the rule of law and due process is respected and never taken for granted.
