The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Dartmouth College voted to censure the university's president, Sian Leah Beilock, over her decision to summon the police to remove a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus, calling her action harmful and disruptive.
Dr. Beilock defended her move, citing a reasonable and credible threat of violence. The close vote of 183 to 163 reflected the campus division over her decision.
Annelise Orleck, a faculty member knocked to the ground during the police intervention, expressed gratification at the censure vote against President Beilock.
The censure motion was the first of its kind in Dartmouth's 255-year history. A week prior, Columbia University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences expressed no confidence in its president over a similar issue.
