Daniil Medvedev racks up hefty fine for unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse after U.S. Open meltdown
"because of the delay caused by an outside interference."
"I just expressed my emotions, my unhappiness with the decision,"
"And then the crowd did what they did without me, without me asking them too much. And it was fun to witness."
Daniil Medvedev was fined $42,500 by the U.S. Open, including $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse, following his first-round loss to Benjamin Bonzi. A photographer stepped onto the court as Bonzi prepared a second serve, and the chair umpire awarded Bonzi another first-serve opportunity because of outside interference. Medvedev berated the umpire, leaned into a microphone, and encouraged crowd reaction before signaling for calm. The disruption lasted about six minutes. Medvedev forced a fifth set but ultimately lost 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4 and repeatedly smashed a racket after the match.
