Couples wed as landmark same-sex marriage law takes effect in Thailand
Briefly

On Thursday, Thailand made history by becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to officially recognize same-sex marriage, allowing hundreds of couples to tie the knot. Major celebrations took place, including over 150 weddings at a luxury mall in Bangkok. The law passed last June, offering same-sex couples full legal recognition, ensuring their family rights and protections. This shift follows decades of activism and reflects Thailand's more open societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ communities, despite past political challenges affecting the marriage equality movement.
"I feel more secure in our life because we can be a family and be recognized as a couple in society," Anticha Sangchai told NPR.
"This is special for us because this is a day of history in Thailand," said Sangchai.
"Thailand is the perfect country to do it, because the society is really open to gay people," said Tom Tan.
"This is more about building a life together and having the legal rights to protect what we build together," said Tan.
