"CPB's final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving, rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks,"
"Even at this moment, I am convinced that public media will survive, and that a new Congress will address public media's role in our country because it is critical to our children's education, our history, culture and democracy to do so,"
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting voted to dissolve after Congress eliminated its appropriations this past summer. The private agency had distributed federal funding to PBS, NPR and hundreds of local television and radio stations for more than a half-century. The board chose complete dissolution rather than remaining a defunded shell, citing protection of the public media system and democratic values. The organization had been winding down following congressional defunding encouraged by President Trump and enacted under full GOP control. Leaders emphasized public media's importance for children's education, history, culture and democracy and arranged preservation of archives and records with partners.
