Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka will meet in the US Open fourth round after Gauff beat Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1 and Osaka defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. The pair have met five times previously, with Gauff leading 3-2, including Osaka's 2019 win and Gauff's 2020 Australian Open victory. Gauff can reach the quarterfinals for the third time in four years with a win. Osaka aims to re-establish herself at the late stages of a major after becoming a mother. Serving consistency is a major factor for Gauff, who has high double-fault totals and is refining her serve under Gavin MacMillan. Osaka's aggressive returning will test any short or weak serves.
NEW YORK -- Former champions Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka will go head to head in a blockbuster fourth-round matchup at the US Open on Monday night, after booking their places in the last 16 in contrasting styles. Gauff cruised past Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-3, 6-1, while Osaka battled past Australia's Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 to make the fourth round of a major for the first time since she won the Australian Open in 2021.
No one has served more double faults than her in the past three years -- she is closing in on 1,000 since the start of 2023. And her serve remains a work in progress under the guidance of Gavin MacMillan, the man who cured Aryna Sabalenka's serving woes a few years ago. Gauff has been cutting down on her pace in an effort to get more first serves in and take the pressure off her second serve, which is still shaky at times.
