Recently, President Donald Trump made headlines by suggesting that Elon Musk should visit Fort Knox to verify the existence of gold, following his own fantastical claims that it may have been stolen. During a discussion on CNBC, former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin affirmed that the gold is indeed still there, recalling his own visit, the first by a treasury secretary in over 50 years, and stating that stringent security protocols are in place. He also commented that should Trump seek an audit of the gold, it could certainly be arranged.
The gold was there when I visited and I hope nobody's moved it. I'm sure they haven't. There are very serious security protocols in place.
If President Trump wants it to be audited, that's obviously something that can be done.
We thought the gold stands for the U.S., although it's not backing the U.S. currency.
When I visited Fort Knox, it was the first time in over 50 years that a treasury secretary had gone there.
