On July 4, Taylor Bergmann awoke to Erin Burgess screaming about a flood. The Guadalupe River had overflowed, rapidly flooding their home and displacing furniture. As the water rose, Bergmann faced a critical moment when Burgess became trapped by a refrigerator. Bergmann prioritized rescuing her, but as they were swept away by the current, they clung to a tree for safety. The event showcased the challenges of swift water rescue and the emotional turmoil experienced by those involved.
Bergmann recalls the flood, stating, "A flash flood warning is so common for this area... But now that the river had broken through the glass doors..."
He describes the chaos, noting, "We had a really big kitchen island with granite countertops; it flipped upside down. The water moved all of the appliances like 'Jenga pieces.'"
Bergmann expresses the panic of the moment: "She just sat there screaming for help but we couldn't do anything because the water was so high."
During the struggle, Bergmann reflects on their situation: "I was just standing up with my broad shoulders trying to make sure that nothing swept her away..."
