An airlift operation is underway to repatriate over 1,000 Chinese nationals who had been working in online scam centers in Myanmar. This initiative follows a coordinated effort among Thailand, China, and Myanmar aimed at dismantling these centers that exploited people worldwide through various deceitful schemes, including fake romantic offers and fraudulent investment proposals. While the first phase has seen 16 flights scheduled for Chinese nationals, officials project that up to 10,000 people, including those from other nations, could be repatriated from these scam centers as the operation continues.
Thai officials have reported that as many as 10,000 individuals may eventually be repatriated from Myanmar's scam centers, highlighting the scale of this operation.
Rescued workers were initially transported across the border to Thailand, where they underwent processing, including biometric scans, before boarding flights back to China.
This coordinated effort among Thailand, China, and Myanmar has come after a month of shutting down scams that defrauded victims worldwide through various deceptive schemes.
The ongoing airlift so far has scheduled 16 flights for approximately 1,041 Chinese nationals, revealing the extensive effort involved in their safety and return.
