Bukele Proposes Deal That Would Free Deported Venezuelans
Briefly

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele proposed a humanitarian deal to repatriate 252 Venezuelan detainees sent to his country by the U.S., in exchange for the release of 252 political prisoners in Venezuela, including prominent opposition figures. This proposal arises amid heightened tensions, particularly concerning Venezuela's detention of political prisoners. Bukele stressed that the swap should also include the release of nearly 50 foreign detainees, including Americans, as figures in Venezuela's prisons increase. The proposal showcases Bukele's approach to leverage political dynamics in the region while highlighting Venezuela's ongoing human rights issues and international scrutiny.
I want to propose a humanitarian agreement that includes the repatriation of 100 percent of the 252 Venezuelans who were deported, in exchange for the release and surrender of an identical number (252) of the thousands of political prisoners you hold.
Mr. Maduro responded explosively to the detention of Venezuelans by El Salvador's government, telling Mr. Bukele not to be an accomplice in this kidnapping.
As of last month, at least 68 foreign passport holders were wrongfully imprisoned in Venezuela, according to a Venezuelan watchdog group, Foro Penal, more than Mr. Maduro has ever held.
His goals include pushing the United States to renegotiate sanctions on his government.
