Buckeyes' Day no fan of proposed portal changes
"No, I don't think it's a good idea at all,"
"And the conversations we had with the Big Ten coaches, I think the majority of them agree. I just don't quite understand how teams that are playing in the Playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they're still getting ready to play for games. It doesn't make any sense to me."
"The NCAA announced last week that the FBS Oversight Committee voted to move the winter transfer portal window from December to January, shifting to a 10-day period that would start on Jan. 2, 2026."
Ryan Day opposed a proposal to move the FBS winter transfer portal from December to a 10-day period starting Jan. 2, 2026, and to eliminate the spring April window. The FBS Oversight Committee supported the change and the Division I Administrative Committee must approve it before Oct. 1 for implementation. The proposed January window would open one day after College Football Playoff quarterfinals and close Jan. 11. Day said most Big Ten coaches share concerns that the timing forces teams competing in the Playoffs to make roster and signing decisions while preparing for games. Coaches and administrators seek relief from December calendar congestion involving coaching changes, bowl practices, transfer recruiting, and high school signing day.
