The Wild Felid Advocacy Center in Shelton has temporarily closed after a devastating bird flu outbreak, resulting in the deaths of 20 out of its 37 resident big cats.
Director Mark Mathews noted that the bird flu outbreak raised concerns about how the big cats contracted the virus, with possible routes including contaminated meat, water, or contact with infected birds.
Bird flu has been reported in 50 states, and recent upticks in wildlife cases prompted warnings from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife regarding domestic pets, particularly cats.
The sanctuary's significant losses include various species such as tigers and cougars, while recovery efforts continue for three cats, including one in critical condition.
