A barge hit the Pelican Island Bridge in Galveston, causing an oil spill into Galveston Bay and shutting down the only road to the island.
County officials halted vessel traffic in the channel temporarily and were assessing the structural damage to the bridge connected to Pelican Island.
The barge, owned by Martin Operating Partnership, broke loose and collided with the causeway, leading to the incident on Wednesday morning.
