Authorities identify East Bay man killed following police chase
"We understand there are many questions surrounding this incident. Pursuits are continually monitored and evaluated by officer and supervisors to determine if the pursuit should continue or not."
"The vehicle trying to get away fatally hit Erwin De La Cruz died seconds after police called off the pursuit Tuesday morning. Antioch police earlier had pursued the car, which later sped down roads in Oakley at speeds up to 80 mph, police said."
"This case is under active investigation by three different agencies. So we can't speak to specifics at this time."
Erwin De La Cruz, a 50-year-old Oakley resident, died when struck by a stolen Honda driven by a boy attempting to evade police. Antioch police initiated pursuit of the vehicle, which was later continued by Oakley police at speeds exceeding 80 mph through Main Street and multiple busy intersections. An Oakley sergeant terminated the chase after the vehicle turned onto O'Hara Avenue. The fatal collision occurred seconds after the pursuit ended at Main Street and Bridgehead Road. The driver and passenger sustained major injuries. The vehicle and a firearm inside were both reported stolen from Oakland on Sunday. Three agencies—Oakley police, Antioch police, and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office—are investigating the incident.
