Austria's rebel nuns refuse to give up Instagram to stay in their convent
"We can't agree to this deal. Without the media, we'd have been silenced."
"We need to resolve this but any agreement we reach must be in accordance with God's will and shaped by human reason."
Three Augustinian nuns in their eighties returned to their convent near Salzburg after leaving a care home they say church authorities placed them into against their will. The sisters maintain they did not realize they had signed away a lifelong right to remain when the abbey and archdiocese acquired the property. The nuns have gained significant public support and more than 185,000 Instagram followers while essentially squatting in the convent. The abbey offered to let them stay only if they ceased social media, stopped speaking to the press and forgave legal action. The nuns rejected the conditions and the provost has asked the Vatican to intervene. A canon law scholar called the offer unreasonable, inhumane and without legal basis.
