The Capybara Café in St. Augustine, Florida, is the first in the United States to allow visitors to interact with live capybaras, who can be fed, petted, and cuddled. Owned by Noah's Ark Sanctuary, the café arose from a need to financially support the sanctuary, which rescues various animals. Since its October opening, it has attracted around 100 customers daily, and owner Stephanie Angel noted that complaints are nonexistent, with visitors wishing for more time with the beloved rodents.
You work in any other field, you always have unhappy customers and complaints. We generally don't have any of that. If anything, our complaints are, 'Man I wish I had more time with the capybaras.'
The idea for the cafe stemmed from an animal rescue and rehabilitation center needing money to remain open. Stephanie Angel, the cafe's owner, said she was surprised how popular the cafe became after it opened in October; she said she gets about 100 customers per day.
