On Wednesday night, a U.S. Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines jet near Reagan National Airport after air traffic controllers issued warnings. The helicopter crew acknowledged the alerts but requested visual separation instead of taking evasive action. Barely 12 seconds after the second warning, the collision occurred, resulting in the deaths of all 64 passengers aboard the flight and the three soldiers in the helicopter. Experts suggest the crew may have mistakenly tracked another aircraft, contributing to the disaster.
All 64 people on board the flight from Wichita, Kansas, and the three soldiers on the helicopter are believed to have died.
According to three aviation experts, the helicopter had more than enough time to take action to avoid the plane.
