Anthem reverses plans to put time limits on anesthesia coverage
Briefly

"There has been significant widespread misinformation about an update to our anesthesia policy. As a result, we have decided to not proceed with this policy change," Anthem stated, clarifying their intentions amid confusion.
"To be clear, it never was and never will be the policy of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to not pay for medically necessary anesthesia services," the company emphasized, reinforcing its commitment to necessary healthcare provisions.
"The proposed update to the policy was only designed to clarify the appropriateness of anesthesia consistent with well-established clinical guidelines," Anthem explained, attempting to contextualize the initial decision within clinical standards.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists noted the policy would have been implemented in states like Connecticut, New York, and Missouri, prompting significant concern and subsequent discussions with Anthem.
