A recent Reuters Institute report shows that social media and video networks are now the leading news sources for Americans, with 54% reporting usage in the past week. Traditional outlets like TV and online news sites followed closely, while only 7% turned to AI chatbots. Unlike the significant news spikes in 2016 during President Trump's inauguration, this year's trend reveals a shift towards social media. The report emphasizes the rapid transition towards social media in the U.S. compared to other countries, linked to cultural factors like personality-led media.
"This was roughly in the week of the inauguration. So you kind of would expect television news to have a huge bump," Newman said.
"People across the world are increasingly turning to social media for their news, but that trend is happening faster and with more impact in the U.S.," Newman stated.
"One reason is that the U.S. has a tradition of 'personality-led' news media that has transferred into the digital realm as YouTubers and podcasters," Newman noted.
"The U.S. lacks the well-trusted, national media brands that other countries have, resulting in more room for individual content creators."
