A SkyWest flight from Minneapolis experienced a near-collision with a B-52 Stratofortress while preparing to land in Minot, N.D. The pilot executed an aggressive maneuver to avoid a crash or turbulent wake from the military aircraft, which was not communicated to them prior. Passengers applauded after the successful maneuver. The Air Force and FAA are investigating the incident. SkyWest confirmed the flight landed safely after a go-around due to another aircraft's presence in their flight path.
"You probably saw the airplane kind of sort of coming at us," the pilot later told the passengers. "Nobody told us about it."
The pilot put the Embraer jet through an "aggressive maneuver" to avoid either of two calamities: a collision with the eight-engine bomber, or flying too close to its turbulent wake.
SkyWest told NPR that flight 3788, a near-daily afternoon flight from Minneapolis, "landed safely in Minot after being cleared for approach by the tower," adding that it "performed a go-around when another aircraft became visible in their flight path."
The Air Force says it’s looking into what happened in the airspace near Minot International Airport on Friday.
