A tribe in Maine is using opioid settlement funds on a sweat lodge to treat addiction
Briefly

The Mi'kmaq Nation in Maine spent about $50,000 of its opioid settlement funds to build a healing lodge it will use for traditional sweat ceremonies to help people recover from addiction.
The experience can be 'a vital tool' in healing according to Katie Espling, health director for the roughly 2,000-member tribe, who highlighted the importance of the sweat lodge in complementing existing health services.
Decades ago, a sweat ceremony helped Mi'kmaq Nation Chief Edward Peter-Paul improve his relationship with drugs and alcohol, leading him to believe that the new healing lodge can offer similar benefits to others in the tribe.
