A strain of mpox previously undetected in the U.S. has been found in California. The CDC reports the case linked to travel from East Africa.
The CDC estimates that casual contact during travel poses a low risk for mpox transmission. They urge avoiding close contact with those infected and surfaces they touched.
Mpox, caused by zoonotic transmission, was declared a public health emergency by the WHO earlier this year. Previously known as monkeypox, name was changed to reduce stigma.
Clade I of mpox is typically more severe, but the current outbreak shows milder symptoms. The disease can cause a rash and has a 3 to 17-day incubation.
