Cecilia Vega of 60 Minutes highlighted that 75% of the Venezuelan migrants imprisoned in El Salvador by the Trump administration lack any public criminal records. While the administration provided limited information about these detainees, internal documents reviewed by the program indicated that most have no convictions or pending charges. Only a small percentage were found to have criminal records, typically for non-violent offenses, raising questions about the justification for their imprisonment in a notorious facility without due process.
We cross-referenced that with domestic and international court filings, news reports and arrest records whenever we could find them. At least 22 percent of the men on the list have criminal records here in the United States or abroad.
We could not find criminal records for 75 percent of the Venezuelans, 179 men, now sitting in prison, she added. The Trump administration has yet to release the identities of the Venezuelan men it sent to El Salvador last month.
