2 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Vehicle Accident Near Mexico Border
Briefly

A vehicle accident near Santa Teresa, N.M., resulted in the deaths of two U.S. Marines and serious injuries to a third. The soldiers were deployed as part of Joint Task Force Southern Border, tasked with assisting in border security efforts initiated under the Trump administration. Following an emergency declaration, thousands of troops were sent to fortify the southwestern border. The military has launched an investigation into the accident, which reflects the dangers of noncombat-related vehicle incidents in military operations, with a notable history of such accidents claiming lives in the past decade.
The military did not release the names of the soldiers who were killed. The three soldiers were Marines, according to a U.S. military official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.
Vehicle accidents are a common cause of death in the U.S. military. From 2010 to 2019, at least 123 service members were killed as a result of 3,753 accidents involving tactical vehicles in noncombat situations.
