National surveys of roughly 800 sixth through 12th grade public school teachers, 1,000 ninth through 12th grade students, and 1,000 parents measured AI use and related experiences. The vast majority of students (86%), educators (85%), and parents (75%) used AI during the last school year. Nearly one in five high schoolers report that they or someone they know has had a romantic relationship with AI, and 42% say they or someone they know have used AI for companionship. Greater numbers of school-related AI uses correlate with higher likelihood that students know someone who considers AI a friend or romantic partner. Higher AI use in schools correlates with increased exposure to data breaches, troubling interactions with AI, and AI-generated deepfakes used to sexually harass and bully students. Teachers who use AI for many tasks report more large-scale data breaches (28%) than teachers who use little or no AI (18%).
