Gov. Tim Walz stated, "I think all of us know, the Electoral College needs to go. We need a, we need a national popular vote." This reflects his consistent stance that the current electoral system isn't serving democracy well.
During campaign events, Walz emphasized that presidential candidates should not just focus on battleground states, urging the need to engage voters nationally by stating, "We need to win Beaver County, Pa. We need to be able to go into York, Pa., and win."
Despite the popularity of abolishing the Electoral College among voters, it would necessitate either a constitutional amendment or a shift in how states award their electoral votes, suggesting considerable political hurdles remain ahead.
A spokesman for Walz clarified that Vice President Harris's campaign did not share his enthusiasm for abolishing the Electoral College, highlighting a potential rift in collective campaign messaging as Election Day approaches.
