Governor Burgum has close ties with fossil fuel companies, notably with billionaire Harold G. Hamm who, alongside others, significantly funded Trump’s campaign.
The Interior Department, which Burgum will oversee, manages about 500 million acres of public land and plays a crucial role in energy leases as well as environmental conservation.
During a gala event, Trump mentioned Burgum’s appointment, highlighting his expertise and fit for a department that oversees drilling, national parks, and Indigenous relations.
