Senator Martin Conway's recent arrest for intoxication has led to internal strife within Fine Gael, prompting inquiries about the party's handling of past issues regarding Conway's behavior. Tánaiste Mr. Harris revealed that he only became aware of earlier controversial behavior, investigated back in 2020, late last year. The party is now under pressure from Sinn Féin, with Harris stating a full investigation will take place. Mr. Harris emphasized that high standards must be upheld within the party and that past behavior will be scrutinized during the disciplinary process.
From my perspective, when the issue had been examined, when an apology had been issued, when it was deemed at that stage that no further action was required, it would be a very unusual thing for a new leader to then reopen a matter in that context which was deemed to require no further action.
It is appropriate that Mr Conway resigned from the party whip and that there will be a full investigation into the behaviour that led to the resignation.
Any disciplinary process will also look at the person in the round. Has the person come to the attention of the party before? Have there been other issues?
I expect the highest standards to be upheld and I would expect that to be considered as part of this process.
