Istanbul mayor arrest was to stop presidency bid; opposition DW 03/20/2025
Briefly

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu's arrest has incited widespread protests across Turkey, with opposition leaders asserting that it threatens democracy. Ongoing political tensions highlight the growing divide between Erdogan's government and dissenters, particularly with Imamoglu viewed as Erdogan's main competitor in upcoming elections. Republican People's Party member Ozgur Ozel expressed belief that Imamoglu's arrest would ultimately backfire and galvanize support against the regime. Despite official denials of political motivations behind the arrest, many view it as a tactic to marginalize opposition leaders and secure Erdogan's grip on power.
"We believe Imamoglu will win. If his candidacy is blocked, we believe this will turn into much greater support," he said.
"We as a nation must stand against this evil. This is my call," Imamoglu posted on X in a message transmitted via his lawyers.
Ozel also said he believed Erdogan would sever any ties the Turkish opposition has with Istanbul by appointing a trustee to lead Turkey's largest city.
Critics see the crackdown on opposition voices as an attempt by Erdogan to cement his position as the country's leader.
