Kamala Harris made a rare public appearance at a conference of Black women in Dana Point, where she condemned the rollback of rights under President Trump and emphasized the importance of self-care. Although she did not directly address her potential candidacy for governor of California, she indicated her commitment to stay politically engaged after her November loss. Her appearance surprised attendees, who welcomed her enthusiastically. Harris is expected to decide on a gubernatorial run by the end of summer, which would significantly impact the Democratic primary landscape.
"We can't go out there and do battle if we don't take care of ourselves and each other," she said at a national conference of Black women.
Harris suggested that she planned to remain politically active in the aftermath of her loss to Trump in November.
Her Thursday appearance was a surprise to the roughly 100 women attending the Leading Women Defined gathering.
If she proceeds, it would jolt a contest that already has prominent Democratic candidates.
