The recent election in Greenland has garnered attention amid President Trump's aspiration to assert control over the strategically significant Arctic island. With heightened voter turnout, polling hours were extended beyond the initial deadline. The outcome of this election is pivotal as it determines the leaders who will respond to Trump's proposal, which he argues is crucial for U.S. security. The geopolitical interest in the region is further complicated by increased military activity from both Russia and China, highlighting the pressure on Greenland's leadership to unite in a time of uncertainty.
Voting was extended by half an hour past a 22:00 GMT deadline amid high voter turnout at several of the 72 polling stations across the mineral-rich island.
Since taking office in January, Trump has promised to make Greenland a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark part of the US, saying it is vital to US security interests.
Greenland's prime minister, Mute Bourup Egede, called the election last month, saying the country needed to be united during a serious time that is unlike anything Greenland has ever experienced.
While Trump has been outspoken about his desire to control Greenland, both Russia and China have also intensified military activity in the Arctic region.
