Thousands of Bolsonaro's supporters rallied at Copacabana Beach, demonstrating against the charges he faces related to his alleged coup attempt in January 2023. Participants, wearing Brazil's national colors, called for amnesty for jailed riot participants. Despite their low turnout of about 18,000, expectations were high, with hopes of 1 million attendees. As Brazil's Supreme Court considers whether Bolsonaro will face trial, he criticized a re-election ban as a threat to democracy, drawing parallels with past political events in the U.S.
Thousands of supporters of Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro rallied at Brazil's famous Copacabana Beach on Sunday to protest the charges the right-wing populist leader faces for an alleged coup attempt.
Bolsonaro and his close allies joined the protest, which also called for Congress to grant amnesty to those in jail for their roles in the January 8, 2023 riot.
The protest comes ahead of a Supreme Court decision over whether Bolsonaro and several of his allies will stand trial for their alleged role in the attempted coup.
Bolsonaro told his supporters in Rio de Janeiro that a ban on him seeking re-election next year amounted to a 'denial of democracy.'
